The Making of an
Heraldic Bookplate

This
collection of five images shows the evolutionary stages,
from
conceptualisation through to the final artwork of a bookplate designed by
Daniel de Bruin..
1. From rough design and a play with composition onto the next stage...

2. Defining the overall outline of the artwork and compiling it within its "canvas". In this case a diamond shape or lozenge. This is the formative period of the design for at this stage, the creative "minds eye" of the artist has just about conceptualised the finished product.

3. Above you can see Daniel changes the "From the Library of" from the initial drawing to the circumference of the lozenge. The text forms a good counter balance with in the composition, otherwise the mantle would create a "heavy" right side.
4. With the charges of the
shield left for almost last, fine line illustrations complete the detail of the
bookplate.

5. And here we have the evolved product in Daniel's
strong contemporary style with accentuated colour to high light the key charges
and mantle tinctures.
