The Society was formed in 1987 as a non-profit making guild of heraldic craftsmen and designers. Candidates for Craft Membership should be artists or craftsmen whose work comprises a substantial element of heraldry and is of a sufficiently high standard to meet the requirements of the Society's Advisory Council. Members are entitled to endorse their work with the words 'Member of the Society of Heraldic Arts'.
The Society's Register of Members is available on request. This contains details of painters, gilders, illuminators & calligraphers; workers in stone, fabrics, enamels, wood, precious metals, glass; seal engravers, painters of ceramics, writers, design consultants, heraldic miniaturists and sculptors.
The Society also offers ADVICE concerning the use of heraldry to enhance corporate or personal identity and its use in graphic design, architecture, commemorative documents, fabrics, artifacts etc. ADVICE on how to apply for a grant of arms. ADVICE concerning the design and proper use of heraldic devices.
