Calligrapher & Heraldic Artist
John studied at Leeds College of Art (1946-1951) then pursued an advanced diploma and MPhil and PhD degrees at Bristol and London Universities. He was taught the art of calligraphy and heraldry by Thomas W Swindlehurst in the traditions of 10th century writing hands established by Edward Johnston, and has produced heraldic scrolls, family trees and heraldic achievements in gold and colour on calfskin. He has done commissions for churches, corporate bodies, local councils, universities, London Livery Companies, Lord Mayors and London Sheriffs, the Inner and Middle Temples, the World Dental Aids Association, the Worshipful Company of Gloucestershire and for numerous individuals. John has also written a number of books on calligraphy and lettering and has taught and lectured widely both in this country and the USA, where he has directed summer schools and been an artist in residence.
